A sort of "before" picture on sheet mulching. In fact, there are already 3 layers down. (1) Mowed down weeds and grasses and any other organic matter I had lying around the area (including leaves and the remains of annual flowers from my front yard). (2) Fresh, uncomposted horse manure (and lots of it). (3) Spoiled hay (it doesn't have to be spoiled but we get enough of it in our barnless situation to feed my needs). The green you see in the patch at this point is garden ties holding last year's blackberry canes to the string around the posts. This will be the first year we get blackberries.
